Local and Regional Attractions

Lion Mill is within easy travelling distance from Perth – approximately 40 minutes from the Perth CBD, and is perfect destination for individual tastings or as part of a longer tour and activities in and around the Perth Hills area.

Our vineyard is a member of the “Heart of the Hills Wine Trail” that comprises seven wineries and food outlets in the Darlington, Parkerville, Mt Helena and Woorooloo districts. All are within 25 and 50 kilometres of the Perth CBD. We are close to Darlington, Carosa (next door in fact), and Lake Charlotte wineries all of which offer meals and wine tasting. The Bickley Valley wine area is close by and a journey to it from the “Heart of the Hills” can take in the scenic Mundaring Weir and Hills forest. For a longer day or weekend tour, the “Heart of the Hills” is at the centre of the Perth Hills viticultural region and between the southern area around Jarrahdale and the Chittering Valley to the north. Details on the wineries in the Perth Hills can be found at www.perthhillswine.com

Besides being able to savour the sensations of fine wine, visitors to the Heart of the Hills have a choice of food to combine with that experience: from world class a la carte to informal café style. For information on food and wine, visit the Mundaring Tourism Association and follow the links to “Food and Wine”.

Of course, you can also visit or call the Mundaring Tourism Centre. There you can find a plenitude of information about all aspects of tourism in the “Heart of the Hills” including maps and brochures to help you discover the delights of the area. The Centre is located at the Old School, 7225 Great Eastern Highway, Mundaring [ph. 9295 0202].

The Tourism Centre can also assist with bookings for accommodation and it has an online booking facility on its web home page. Accommodation in the ‘Heart of the Hills’ includes bed and breakfast, chalet, and hotel, and unit styles.

Local artists like Brian Aylward at Wooroloo [ph. 9573 1294] invite you to visit and view their fine art. You can also choose from a range of crafts at various outlets, including the Mundaring Arts Centre in the Old Post Office, Great Eastern Highway, Mundaring.

In season on a summer’s evening, there is little that can surpass the experience of attending a screening at the Kookaburra open air cinema at Allen Road, Mundaring Weir, especially when you can combine it with a picnic meal and a bottle of local wine before the screening.

Mundaring Weir also offers you the local Hotel, a number of serviced picnic and barbecue sites around the Weir itself, the Weir, and, of course, the Number 1 Pump Station Museum which commemorates the engineering feat to provide water to the Eastern Goldfields at the beginning of the last century.

If it’s a picnic or barbecue that you would like to combine with your wine tasting experience, then, you have a wide choice including Lake Leschenaultia at Chidlow, the Weir, and the Mundaring Sculpture Park.

The Hills also offers visitors a large number of opportunities to experience the flora and fauna of this delightful area. You can do so as part of a visit to the CALM Hills Forest Discovery Centre, Allen Rd, Mundaring Weir, or by trekking or cycling one of the many trails in the area. These include the Railway Reserve Heritage Trail that follows the route of now discontinued rail lines through the Shire of Mundaring; the Munda Biddi Bike Trail that begins at the Sculpture Park in Nicol St, Mundaring; the Mundaring Loop Trail for mountain bikers; and the bridle trail that follows the route of the old Eastern Railway. The forest also has a number of trails and you are close by to the northern end of the Bibbulmun Track that begins in Kalamunda.
