et in the Darling Range east of Perth, Lion Mill is a vineyard planted on land selected in the 1870s in an area that became an important fruit growing and timber milling centre. The front verandah of the old cottage, built over a century ago, looks out over the vineyard and is the cellar door tasting area on this picturesque property.
Lion Mill is part of a gently sloping valley on an upper arm of Jane Brook, and has loam to gravelly loam soils. The elevation – about 300 metres, the cold winters and the warm dry summers provide conditions that are well suited to the production of quality fruit displaying regional characteristics.
Patrick and Ann Bertola planted their first vines at Lion Mill in 1999. They have since established three acres of predominantly red varieties: Shiraz, Cabernet, Merlot, Zinfandel, and a new planting of Durif. They have a single white, Semillon.
The wines are produced at Carosa Vineyard by Jim Elson and have been very successfully exhibited. The quality of the wines, all produced from fruit grown on the property, reflect the favourable conditions, the high standard of Patrick and Ann’s viticultural practice, and the close attention to detail that can only come from long hours spent in the vineyard – all pruning, thinning and picking are hand-done.
